Ligaments are the unsung heroes of our bodies, providing stability and support to our joints. In a world where physical activity is an essential part of our lives, understanding and caring for our ligaments is paramount. Whether you're an athlete, an active individual, or simply someone who values your overall well-being, this information could be the key to a healthier, more injury-free life.
New therapies and treatments are always on the horizon, in the dynamic field of healthcare, so it's crucial to keep up-to-date with the latest innovations that can help us stay healthy. In this blog post, let’s explore how red light therapy can be a key player in keeping our vital connective tissues strong and flexible.
What are Ligaments and why is Ligament Health so Vital
These remarkable structures are an integral part of our body's intricate connective tissue network, serving as the glue that holds bones and joints together. Without ligaments, our bodies would lack the essential stability required for everyday movement. But here's a fascinating tidbit: ligaments, despite their critical role, come with their own set of challenges. Due to their relatively meager blood supply, ligaments have a longer healing process compared to other tissues. This characteristic makes ligament injuries, such as a torn ACL in the knee, a major concern, especially for athletes and active individuals. Furthermore, while ligaments provide crucial joint stability, they can sometimes be overly flexible, leading to a condition known as hypermobility syndrome. In this scenario, joints can move beyond their typical range of motion, potentially causing discomfort and injury.
What is Red Light Therapy?
To start, let’s look at the history of red light therapy. The use of light for therapeutic purposes dates back centuries. Ancient cultures like the Egyptians and Greeks recognized the healing properties of sunlight. However, the modern development of red light therapy can be traced to the late 20th century when scientists began to explore the potential health applications of specific light wavelengths. Over time, research has expanded, leading to a better understanding of how light can positively impact cellular processes.
Red light therapy, also known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT) or photobiomodulation, is a non-invasive therapeutic technique that utilizes specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to stimulate cellular function and promote healing within the body. When the body is exposed to these wavelengths of red and near-infrared light, it can penetrate the skin and be absorbed by the mitochondria, the energy-producing powerhouses of cells. This interaction helps increase the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the cellular fuel and triggers various biological responses.
Red light therapy essentially is an incredible tool that offers a wide array of benefits that span from rejuvenating muscles and revitalizing skin to actively reducing systemic inflammation.
So How Can Red Light Therapy Benefit Ligament Health?
Extensive research has revealed the remarkable potential of red/NIR light to enhance and expedite the healing process across a wide range of injuries. Whether it's tendon or ligament tears, bone fractures, or skin wounds, the therapeutic benefits are noteworthy. “These positive effects are thought to be attributed to the impact on local growth factors essential for cellular repair, as well as its influence on the body's inflammatory processes.” (Ari Whitten, 2018)
Let’s take a look at this study. This study highlighted the central role of combining medicinal herbs and laser therapy in accelerating the healing process of the medial cruciate ligament (MCL). The study's findings yielded an intriguing discovery: the groups subjected to laser treatments exhibited a noteworthy increase in the fibril diameter of their ligaments. Given the prevalence of ACL and MCL tears among athletes across various sports, this innovative procedure holds the potential to significantly expedite their return to play, marking a promising development in the world of sports medicine.
Additionally, there's a shining beacon of hope for those struggling with knee osteoarthritis as seen in this study. When combined with targeted exercises, high-intensity laser therapy has shown remarkable results. It turns out that tissues like ligaments, which receive less blood flow, can greatly benefit from the power of red light therapy. In the study, patients with knee osteoarthritis witnessed significant improvements when they incorporated high-intensity laser therapy into their exercise routine, far surpassing the progress of those who relied solely on exercise alone. Both treatment modalities (high and low-level laser therapy) exhibited superior outcomes in the management of knee osteoarthritis.
Let’s Explore 3 Red Light Therapy Benefits that can relate to ligament health:
- Pain Relief: Red light therapy has been shown to reduce pain and inflammation in various conditions. It can help alleviate pain associated with ligament injuries, promoting a quicker recovery. By reducing inflammation in the affected area, red light therapy facilitates the healing process.
- Circulation: Red light therapy can improve blood circulation, which can have a help overcome the challenge of healing ligaments.
- Wound & Accelerated Healing: It can support the healing of wounds and surgical incisions by stimulating tissue repair. Combining red light therapy with other treatments, can potentially speed up the healing process and lead to a quicker return to normal activities.
- Collagen Production: Red light therapy has been shown to boost collagen production, which is essential for ligament strength and elasticity. Collagen is crucial for ligament repair, as it is the main structural protein in ligaments.
Other ways in which red light therapy can positively impact the healing process have also been observed:
Mental Health: There is emerging research indicating that red light therapy may have a positive impact on mood and mental health by increasing serotonin and endorphin levels.
Bone Health: It has the potential to support bone health by enhancing bone density and fracture healing.
Muscle Recovery: Athletes and fitness enthusiasts use red light therapy to speed up muscle recovery after intense workouts.
Tips for Optimizing Results When Incorporating Red Light Therapy into Your Health Routine
Now that we've unveiled the scientific basis for the advantages of red light therapy in promoting ligament health, let's delve into ways you can incorporate it into your everyday routine.
- There are various red light therapy panels on the market for home use, making it comfortable and convenient to incorporate into your everyday routine.
- Combine red light therapy with other health and wellness practices, such as meditation, yoga, or aromatherapy, to create a holistic approach to your daily routine.
- Use red light therapy before or after workouts to aid in muscle recovery and reduce inflammation.
- Target areas of the body that may be prone to soreness or injury
- The closer you position the light to your body, ideally around 6-12 inches away, the more effectively you can deliver therapeutic levels of treatment to deeper tissues. This is particularly crucial when targeting the tendons and ligaments, where the near-infrared range of “800-880 nm is better suited for deeper penetration.” (Ari Whitten, 2018)
- To maximize the benefits of red light therapy, consistency is key. Establish a routine that you can realistically maintain over time, whether it's daily, a few times a week, or as needed.
It's crucial to emphasize that the efficacy of red light therapy in addressing ligament health can differ among individuals. Its incorporation into a comprehensive treatment strategy should be under the guidance of a healthcare provider. We recommend that you check with your doctor or healthcare provider before starting red light therapy to make sure that it is a safe and helpful treatment for you.
In conclusion, the studies above highlight the potential of this cutting-edge treatment and how it can transform lives and provide new avenues for those seeking relief from joint discomfort. It's important to note that ongoing research is needed to fully understand its capabilities and mechanisms.

I was particularly interested in this article because I am using red light therapy for Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome. This syndrome arises when a ligament passing between the inner ankle bone and the heel immediately below it squashes the tunnel that leads nerve fibres to various parts of the foot. The result is a stinging pain, or a feeling like an electric shock when the position or the movement of the foot increases pressure on the tunnel and hence the nerve fibres. Presumably this problem is caused by a stiffening or a shortening of the ligament passing over the tunnel. Whether or not red light treatment will soften this ligament, or perhaps make it more flexible, so that it no longer squashes the tunnel, remains to be seen.

One if the key factors that your company did not mention to me was that lying down and having the machine above me on the bed is far more effective than standing while doing the treatment.
I found this out from my sister who pays for treatments on a thor bed red light system. Her operator passed down the info to me that penetration is far more effective when muscles are relaxed when lying down.
So I have been using my machine for 3 monthes and in last 2 weeks of using it lying down I notice it appears to be working.
It would have been useful to know this when
I started with the machine….I started at100 per cent on both controls 12 inches away and total time front and back 8 minutes… it was too strong…
I an now at 50per cent both controls and total of 6 minutes..
Also the taking of Vitamin C plus with 1000 mg before and after treatment makes recovery far more effective..
The above info should have come from you in useage guidelines and I am disappointed you were not there for me.
I suggest you enhance the useage guidelines and put my information in it as well as other situations people are experiencing on the adaptation procedures.
Thank you
Regards
Keith
PS.. I am happy with the machine and think it will solve the issues I have. I think the readers will want to know above and please do not alter my comments.
